When Spiritual Guidance Becomes a Search for Certainty

I've been noticing something interesting about myself lately.

I can take something as simple and beautiful as curiosity and somehow turn it into another thing I'm supposed to get right.

Which, honestly, is kind of funny when I think about it.

I've been practicing asking, "How does it get any better than this?" And I love that question. Not because I think it's some magic phrase that's going to make wonderful things happen, but because it invites me to be curious about what's possible.

But then I started noticing something.

I'd ask the question, feel wonderful, and then somewhere along the way, I'd start looking for something to happen.

Was that a sign? Was something better coming? Did I miss the opportunity?

And there I was, trying to manage the very thing I was supposedly allowing.

I had to laugh at myself a little.

When listening becomes looking for an answer

I think we can do this with spiritual guidance, too.

We ask for clarity. We meditate. We pray. We pull a card. We listen for that intuitive nudge.

There's nothing inherently wrong with any of those things. They're all practices I enjoy.

But I've started recognizing the difference between being open to guidance and needing an answer so I can finally feel comfortable moving forward.

Because sometimes I don't necessarily want more information.

I want certainty.

I want to know that whatever I'm considering is going to work out. That I'm making the right choice. That I'm not overlooking something important.

And I can dress all of that up in some really beautiful spiritual language.

That's been an interesting thing to recognize.

Making room for a different experience

Lately, I've been experimenting with just listening.

Not trying to interpret every feeling. Not turning every coincidence into a message. Not assuming that because something hasn't become clear yet, I must be doing something wrong.

Just being willing to notice what's actually happening.

And sometimes, yes, something becomes clearer.

Other times? Not really.

I might still feel uncertain. I might still have questions.

But I can take a step anyway.

I think that's something I've been learning more deeply: I don't need to have everything figured out before I participate in my own life.

And listening doesn't mean sitting around waiting for life to make my choices for me.

I still get to decide. I still get to explore. I still get to try something and see what happens.

A little practice

If you find yourself searching for an answer to something right now, here's something you might try.

Just notice what you're hoping the answer will give you.

Is it clarity? Reassurance? Permission? A guarantee that you're not going to make a mistake?

You don't have to judge whatever comes up.

For me, even recognizing what I'm reaching for can change how I relate to the situation.

Sometimes I realize I have enough information to make a choice, but I'm afraid of the uncertainty that comes afterward.

Other times, I genuinely need to slow down, gather more information, or have a conversation.

Both are okay.

The point isn't to stop asking questions or seeking guidance.

It's to notice whether I'm listening with an open mind or trying to make life give me the answer I've already decided I need.

And I'm finding there's quite a difference between the two.

So that's what I'm exploring lately.

Listening a little more.

Trying to manage the outcome a little less.

And remembering that I can be curious about what comes next without needing to know exactly what it's going to be.
