Blessed Me or Poor Me? Choosing Gratitude in Difficult Moments

Blessed Me or Poor Me?
I caught myself thinking about how quickly my mind can move into one of two stories: “blessed me” or “poor me.”
We all have moments when life feels irritating, overwhelming, disappointing, or unfair. The goal isn’t to deny those feelings or cover them with positive thinking. What we feel deserves to be acknowledged.
But once we’ve made room for the feeling, we can gently notice the story forming around it.
Am I telling myself that I’m alone, unsupported, or stuck?
Or can I also recognize that, even in this moment, something is still supporting me?
The “poor me” perspective can make one difficult experience feel like the whole truth. Choosing “blessed me” doesn’t mean pretending the difficult part isn’t real. It simply means remembering that it isn’t the only thing that is real.
Sometimes the shift begins with something very small.
The warmth of the sun on your face.
A kind message from a friend.
A quiet moment with someone you love.
The breath moving through your body without you having to force it.
Gratitude may not instantly change the circumstances in front of you, but it can change the place within you from which you meet them. It creates a little more space. A little more openness. A little more choice.
So the next time you notice yourself feeling irritated, overwhelmed, or discouraged, pause and ask:
What am I feeling right now?
What story am I telling myself about this moment?
Is there something here that I can genuinely appreciate without dismissing what I feel?
You don’t have to force yourself to feel blessed.
You can simply become willing to notice that the difficult story may not be the whole story.
